‘Traveler’ is a mobile phone app which monitors the performance, speed, location and number of passengers on a bus, and with the help of ‘big data’ and ‘machine learning’ alerts drivers and authorities to potential dangers. The system automatically sends high speed alerts each time a given bus runs above regulatory speed limits. With an integrated cloud service and a ‘back-end’ monitoring system, we can provide ‘predictive analysis’ and recommendations to road safety officials with the aim to update them on driver‟s performance and traffic situation to help prevent and reduce road accidents. In the unfortunate case of an accident, the app automatically detects it and notifies emergency services, hospitals and families of all users about location. The app uses the same principles to trigger emergency procedure, as airbag systems in cars. The app is designed to work with or without internet. Online, we do real time tracking and analysis of performance and incidents (accident detection, high speed alert). Offline, the app works as a black box device, tracking a driver’s performance and incidents while saving them locally (inaccessible to anyone). When internet connectivity becomes available, the app synchronizes with the server. Also integrated in the app is an offline emergency assistance guide to passengers. This empowers users of our app and give them the tools they need to deal with emergency situations at the “last mile” generally inaccessible to emergency services. Traveler is the first startup in Africa to leverage the power of big data, cloud computing, and machine learning to predict and prevent road accidents, winning some high profile international Awards and being finalist of the “Nobel Prize of Sustainability” (Katerva Awards 2017)
