The Orange Social Venture Prize aims to promote social innovation by supporting development through information and communication technologies (ICT). In addition to funding of up to 25,000 euros, Orange will provide support to the three winners of the Grand Prize for six months from business and telecoms professionals.
Social entrepreneurship is the use of creative, innovative approaches to develop projects and organizations that create broad social impact. Basically, it’s entrepreneurship, but with the central goal of having a social and business impact rather than simply business impact.
The Prize is awarded to three entrepreneurs or startups created less than three years ago that offer high-tech solutions based on mobiles or the Internet to meet the needs of the poorest populations in Africa and the Middle-East. The Award embodies the Group’s values and commitments in the MEA region.
2019 is the ninth edition of the Social Venture Prize. First launched in 2011, it is a major event for the teams at our subsidiaries in the region. A first phase of national competitions takes place in the participating Orange countries (refer to the list of countries in the Rules document online) and each country designates three national winners who compete automatically at the international Grand Prix.
No, each participant must submit its project only once by selecting the country of deployment of the project in the online registration form. The 3 winners from each country will automatically be positioned to compete at the international Grand Prix.
These are the change agents who identify a social need and use entrepreneurial approaches to create these projects and organizations. They are often passionate, creative, risk-taking, and leaders in society.
Entrepreneurs over the age of 21 and start-ups operating for less than three years can qualify for the Prize. There are no nationality requirements. The projects must be implemented in one of the following countries in which Orange operates in Africa and the Middle-East, and listed in the Contest Rules. The eligible countries are: Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Senegal, Botswana, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Mali, Guinea Conakry, Guinea Bissau, Madagascar, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Jordan, Burkina Faso and Sierra Leone.

The Prize officially launches on the 4th of March, 2019.
The deadline for submissions is May 30th, 2019 (9pm GMT).
The national juries will meet and nominate the three national winners by country in September 2019 and the International Grand Jury will meet in October to select the three winners of the international Grand Prix. The international award ceremony will take place on November 13th at the AfricaCom Awards, the telecoms reference conference in Africa that will be held in Cape Town, South Africa.
The jury are made up of members who are all professionals working in the ICT, innovation or development sectors, mainly in Africa and the Middle-East. Cheik Tidiane Mbaye, ex CEO of Sonatel (Senegal), chairs the international Grand Jury.
The jury will consider the social and environmental impact of the projects, their degree of innovation, the possibility of expanding the product or service to several countries and the financial viability and feasibility of the projects submitted.
Entrepreneur Club online visitors will be able to vote online for their “Favourite Project” during the national competitions phase but as well during the international phase of the competition. The winner of the “Favourite Project” will have its project submitted to the jury along with the 10 other projects pre-selected for the members of the jury. The jury will then make its final decision, choosing within the 11 projects the 3 winners.
